Lemmy Kaseba

(Livingstone)

Biography

Lemmy Kaseba, a teacher of Art and English, was born in 1975 in Chongwe District of Zambia. He trained as a Primary School teacher at David Livingstone College of Education from 1997 to 1998 and got his Art Teachers’ Diploma with a major in Sculpture from Evelyn Hone College in 2009. His artistic streaks were noticed long before he knew he was a born artist. His quest for art ruled most of his life as a child; if he was not drawing he was modeling with clay or assembling something. He played and lived art, but never gave it a thought until he was about 25 years old. Kaseba is an all-round Artist though he paints more than sculpting or assembling. His painting is peripatetic. He doesn’t follow any rules, theme or movement, though he likes the post-impressionist painters, especially Vincent Van Gogh. He gets inspired by clouds, the way they change form freely anytime. He feels art must flow freely just like the clouds and is best coming from the artist’s point of view. His paintings are bold and aim to make one feel part of the painting. Kaseba, who is currently the Chairperson of the Southern Province Branch of the Visual Arts Council, says he loves art and will die painting!

Suse Kasokota

(Livingstone)

Biography

Suse Kasokota was born in Nchelenge, Zambia in 1979 but grew up in Livingstone where he completed his secondary education. Like many young Zambian artists he is self-taught but owes much of his apprenticeship experience to art workshops, particularly the Insakartists workshops of 2007 and 2008. Kasokota has already exhibited with others in Livingstone and Lusaka, South Africa, and in a Russian mobile exhibition. He has also held solo exhibitions in Lusaka. His preferred medium is acrylic on canvas or hessian, but he experiments with different mediums to produce a surreal mix of subject and colour in painting and sculpture. Trademarking his work are the bright ‘cords’ that form varying foregrounds and backgrounds. Symbolic of promoting peaceful co-existence they have an unnerving complexity about them which is difficult to express in words.

Sydney Nyeleti

(Livingstone)

Biography

Sydney Nyeleti was born in 1988 in Chongwe District. He has been drawing since childhood but started painting on canvas in 2009. Nyeleti is a self taught artist who had a rather rough background. He grew up in Lusaka with only his Mother, who had financial difficulties, making it impossible for him to complete his grade 12 at school. However, in spite of his predicament Nyeleti did not give up on life. At the age of 18 he discovered that he could sign-write, so he started practicing hard and did a lot of sign-writing for shops around Lusaka. Three years later, in 2009, he started painting on canvas and the following year began to take part in exhibitions at the weekly Sunday Market at Arcades Shopping Mall. In 2011 he became a member of the Visual Arts Council and was given a studio at the Art Academy Without Walls (AAWW). Firoz Patel

Biography

Firoz Patel trained as a commercial artist but now works mainly in fine art. Art has always been part of his background and as far back as he can remember he was always experimenting with art and colour. He works with various art materials and techniques and describes himself as an experimental artist. He started with inks doing “dot and line” illustrations, followed by poster paint and water colours, though now he only paints in oil and acrylics. He started painting wildlife and later progressed to other subjects, such as African patterns and landscapes. Firoz’s vibrant work of his “pointillism”, or dots, is his trademark, and is as unique as a fingerprint. Although his work is technically challenging, it also exudes great humour. He studies his subject matter thoroughly before painting. His paintings are made up from numerous colour dots and from close up these dots clearly dominate, but when viewed from a distance the image becomes visible as a whole. Opposite to that he has also introduced a range of work with flat colours, a complete contrast to the style he has become known for. A visual journey of Zambia is a way to describe his work, and his art is a journey through various realms. Everything seems to attract Firoz with a challenge and inspiration. Flora, wildlife, urban & rural life, the Zambian people, traditions and culture have all captured his imagination and come under his brushstrokes. He has had both solo and group exhibitions and is a popular artist in the Zambian art world.
